MICHAEL HIPKINS MRBS

Michael Hipkins was born in 1942 and received his art education at Blackpool College. He then went to Paris to study painting at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and Academie Julienne, further going on to study etching and engraving at S W Hayter;s Atelier 17. In 1990 he was seconded on a full-time ceramics course. Until that time he had worked as a painter. Primarily absorbed with the human figure, he is not so concerned with naturalistic interpretation but rather with truth to the materials used. Trying in essence to bring out the quality of the stone. In 2003 Michael became an Associate Member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Solo shows include Salford City Art Gallery, Lancaster City Art Gallery, Harris Art Gallery Preston and Manchesters Arthouse in 2000. Mixed shows include Thoimpsons Gallery, London 1994, Scottish Royal Academy 2000/2001, The Manchester Academy 2002 and the Belgravia Gallery, London 2006.
