JOHN PICKERING

Born in Barnard Castle, Co.Durham, John initially trained under renowned landscape painter Douglas Pittuck before going on to study Design at Manchester College of Art, gaining a BA in 1972. Working for several years as a printmaker and graphic designer,(with a spell as a curatorial assistant at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London), he returned to Manchester in 1984 to take a Post Graduate Teaching Diploma, leading to a long term Art Lecturing post in Lincoln. John now concentrates fully on his painting after returning to his roots in Teesdale to live. He works entirely in waterbased media on paper with a powerful and graphic style which experimentally combines watercolour washes with passages of heavy gouache. " My paintings move between the truly representational and the semi-abstract, but always with a basis of sound draughtsmanship. They explore the interplay between light and shadow, with my latest work developing more texturally and with a looser feel." John, now a well established regional artist, exhibits widely in the North of England. His paintings are highly sought after and found in private collections as far flung as Canada, the USA, Poland and Australia, as well as throughout the British Isles.
