Born in Glasgow in 1949, George Birrell studied at the Glasgow School of Art and went on to teach and lecture before turning to painting full time in 1998. He has a strong interest in the architecture of the East Coast Scottish towns and fishing villages, and these feature in many of his paintings. Saturated colour, vigorous handling and strong design come together to create a feast for the eyes. He exhibits regularly and successfully in group and solo shows in Scotland, the Cotswolds and London, including The Leith Galery, Edinburgh, The Torrance Gallery, The Stenton Gallery, East Lothian, The Gatehouse Gallery, Glasgow and the Richmond Hill Gallery, London. He has also participated in Art Expo in Manhattan, New York, and his work is in many public and private collections worldwide.
